European auto clubs tested 50 205/55 R16 tyres in a test with AMZS (Automobile and motorcycle association of Slovenia) participating, too. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the organisation of these tests for summer and winter tyres, which is one of the key factors in choosing the right and most suitable car footwear, not only safety but also durability criteria were taken into account for the first time. Continental, Falken and Nexen tyres, also available in our branches, performed really well.

10 out of 50 tyres were rated GOOD–HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (****). Only tyres with balanced characteristics and without major weaknesses in the safety criteria deserve this rating. The top 10 also include Continental Premium Contact 6, Falken ZIEX ZE310 Ecorun, Continental Ultra Contact and Nexen N'Fera Primus.

The overall test score is made up of two main criteria – road safety and environmental properties. As road safety is the most important criterion, it accounts for 70% of the overall score, with environmental criteria accounting for 30%.

Which are the safest?

Ten tyres scored good on the main road safety criterion. On dry roads, the Falken’s ZIEX ZE310 Ecorun was the best performing tyre. Test drivers praised the car's precise handling response and stability at the limit of slip, while the instrumentation measured a relatively short braking distance. In the wet, Continental's Premium Contact 6 performed best, offering very good grip in most manoeuvres, only with some room for improvement in aquaplaning.

Important!

As the tests have shown, and as the AMZS (Automobile and motorcycle association of Slovenia) in particular emphasises, tyres remain a key pillar of safety, so don't cut corners when buying. As little as €25 per tyre (or "only" €100 for a set) can make the difference between life and death.
